Pathology
Pathology is a branch of medical science that involves the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of surgically removed organs, tissues biopsy samples), bodily fluids, and in some cases the whole body (autopsy).
Biopsy
The removal of a sample of tissue for examination under a microscope to check for cancer cells or other abnormalities.
Conditions
If you go get your skin cancer screenings regularly, you can maximize your chances of early detection and a high cure rate. For example melanoma, the most deadly skincancer, has a 98% cure rate when detected at the earliest stage. Also Actinic Keratosisis the most common precancer and it affects more than 58 million people!
Shave Biopsies
A procedure in which a skin abnormality and a thin layer of surrounding skin are removed with a small blade for examination under a microscope. Stitches are not needed with this procedure.
Punch Biopsies
A punch biopsy is a diagnostic test where a small, tube-shaped piece of skin and some other tissue underneath are removed using a sharp cutting tool. It can be done anywhere on the body. The tissue is then examined under a microscope.
Excisions
Surgical removal of tissue for gross and microscopic examination in such a manner that the entire lesion is removed.
Pre-Cancers
Pre-cancers of the skin are changes to the skin cells that make them more likely to
develop into cancer.
Actinic Keratosis
This is a precancerous condition of the skin, which means it has potential to grow into cancer. But if it isn’t treated, it may develop into a type of non-melanoma skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma.
Cancers
Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. It occurs when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations, or genetic defects, that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors.
Basal cell carcinoma
Basal Cell Carcinoma’s are abnormal, uncontrolled growths or lesions that arise in the skin’s basal cells, which line the deepest layer of the epidermis. BCCs often look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars and are usually caused by a combination of cumulative and intense, occasional sun exposure.
Squamous cell carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), the second most common form of skin cancer, is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising from the squamous cells in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, open sores, warts or elevated growths with a central depression; they may crust or bleed. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow.
Malignant melanoma
The most dangerous form of skin cancer, these cancerous growths develop when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations (genetic defects) that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. These tumors originate in the pigment-producing melanocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis. Melanomas often resemble moles; some develop from moles.
